Our curriculum is application oriented and the learning environment at AIE encourages independent thinking and practices followed are rooted in the Indian context. The aim is to prepare
teachers who can take on the challenges of today’s changing realities in schools, and meet the growing expectations of young students, schools and society en masse.

ABOUT THE SEMINAR

The contemporary teacher has to juggle between the roles of a friend, philosopher, guide, disciplinarian, and so on while opening up a world of knowledge and skills to children in a meaningful and interesting manner. At the same time, with the advent of information technology, the role of the teacher in India has evolved from being the sole purveyor and dispenser of knowledge to being a leader and manager. In the process, the concept of the teacher as ‘guru’ has also changed. Teachers are now like any other professional catering to the needs of their clients – subject to criticism and praise depending on the perception of the students, parents and of the community at large.

As pointed out by the document entitled “Code of Professional Ethics for School Teachers” (2010) developed under the aegis of the NCTE, it is necessary to ‘organize teaching as a profession for which expert knowledge, specialized skills and dedication are pre-requisites’. This will lead to ‘community respect and support’, ‘self-direction and self-discipline’ and ‘enhanced self-esteem’ among teachers.

Further, the National Curriculum Framework for Teacher Education has stated that Teaching is a profession and teacher education is a process of professional preparation of teachers. Preparing one for a profession is an arduous task and it involves action from multiple fronts and perspectives.
A profession is characterized by a sufficiently long period of academic training, an organized body of knowledge on which the undertaking is based, an appropriate duration of formal and rigorous professional training in tandem with practical experience in the field and a code of professional ethics that binds its members into a fraternity. (National Curriculum Framework for Teacher Education: Towards Preparing Professional and Humane Teacher; NCTE, 2009)

It follows then that the onus of preparing professionals as well as evaluating the effectiveness of the initial preparation lies on teacher education institutions.

With the above background in mind, the Amity Institute of Education, Amity University Uttar Pradesh is organizing a one-day seminar on the theme “Re-Inventing Professionalism of the Contemporary Teacher”.
